The Delaware Teacher's Program is a unique opportunity for public school teachers to participate in a two-week intensive immersion program abroad, and to earn three graduate credits. Through a grant from the Delaware Department of Education and support form the University of Delaware, teachers can participate for little to no cost aside from airfare.

There are currently two program opportunities: Cáceres Spain​​ and Martinique​.

Cáceres Spain

​June 23 to July 7, 2024​

Delaware teachers are invited to participate in a two-week intensive immersion program in Cáceres, Spain.

Increase your language proficiency, cultural knowledge, and intercultural competence while earning graduate credit in a city declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO.

Network with educators, administrators, and professionals in Spain. Partner with local schools for collaborative projects while broadening your understanding of diverse teaching methodologies and educational systems.

Earn three (3) credits that will count towards an MA, or certificate in Languages, Literatures, Cultures, and Pedagogy.

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Define cultural competence

2. Define the idea of identity in the region

3. Explain the importance of integrating the teaching of culture throughout every unit

4. Enhance critical thinking in the classroom through cultural awareness

5. Develop lessons for teaching culture in the classroom, embedded within current units

Program fee - Cáceres

The program fee will be between $350 and $500 per participant. It does not include airfare to Madrid (estimated at $1,200) or personal travel and activities outside of the program.​​​

Costs subsidized include:

  • ​Full tuition and fees for *SPAN 676 (3 UD graduate credits) that includes 40 hours of immersive course content in Spanish during the program abroad. SPAN 676 can count toward an MA in teaching degree at UD.
  • Homestay with a Spanish family including all meals, laundry, and other amenities.
  • Round-trip airport pickup in Madrid and transfer to Cáceres.
  • Historical site visits, tours, and other organized activities.
  • Travel and health insurance while participating in the program.
  • Support and administration from UD faculty and staff​

Delaware French teachers are invited to participate in a two-week intensive immersion program in Martinique, the French Caribbean island whose culture reflects a distinctive blend of French and West Indian influences. Increase your language proficiency, cultural knowledge, and intercultural competence while earning graduate credit on the magical island of Martinique in the heart of the West Indies.

Network with educators, administrators, and professionals in Martinique. Partner with local schools for collaborative projects while broadening your understanding of diverse teaching methodologies and educational systems.

Participants will earn three (3) credits that will count towards an MA, or certificate in Languages, Literatures, Cultures, and Pedagogy.

This unique program is FREE for participants.​ The program does not include airfare to Martinique (estimated at $1,200) or personal travel and activities outside of the program.​
