​Gladys Ilarregui is an Associate Professor of Spanish, who teaches Colonial Latin America and Latin American Studies (interdisciplinary perspectives). Some of her course offerings are: Human Rights and Latin American Literatures, Economic Inequalities in Latin America poetry and fiction, Poetry and ecology, Colonial marginalities: indigenous codex literature rescued by Europeans hands (Alexander Von Humboldt). Her interests link the passion of Latin American Studies- colonial to present- to her writing of poetry. Since poetry is a form of expression to be found in any possible conflict, her interest focuses on how this genre helps to explain and translate violence to other generations from the beautiful works of pre-Hispanic poets, to convent writings in Mexico, to the walls of the streets in urban LA. Being the human struggle at the core of most of these works, human rights appear as a center of integrated tensions from the displacement of indigenous cultures in XVIth century to the displacement of critical thought in the seventies. There is an undergoing marginality that can be read from the present to the past or from the past to the present through the symbolic instabilities of changing times.
