Donna Coulet Du Gard, an instructor of French at UD, recently received a teaching award from the Delaware Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (DECTFL). The award, which honors Coulet Du Gard for teaching excellence, was presented at the annual DECTFL banquet held Oct. 19 in Dover.
In presenting the award, Alice K. Cataldi, a member of the executive council of DECTFL, said the award honors Coulet Du Gard's exemplary teaching of French and her ability to motivate students to pursue the study of languages.
"Her students have the highest praise for her expertise, as well as for her commitment to teaching," Cataldi said.
Coulet Du Gard frequently participates in conferences on the local and national level and devotes time to serving both UD and the community at large.
As the adviser of the UD French Club and the co-chairperson of Francophone Day, she also provides extracurricular experiences for students. As vice president of the Alliance Française of Wilmington, she is engaged in planning events that provide French cultural experiences.
An American married to a Frenchman, Coulet Du Gard has worked at UD for 15 years. She said she was always interested in teaching, and that when she began studying French in high school she became fascinated with the language and the culture.
"Et voila! Combining my love of French and teaching was the best decision I've ever made," she said.
