ITAL 105 Italian I - Elementary

Introduction to the Italian language and development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through the use of basic texts.

4 credit hours

Note: ITAL 105, All sections are for students who have never studied Italian or who have taken 2 years or less of Italian in high school.  For any language placement questions, please contact Crista Johnson at cristaj@udel.edu.

ITAL 106 Italian II - Elementary/Intermediate

Completion of basic Italian. Increasing mastery of the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

4 credit hours 

PREREQ: ITAL105 

RESTRICTIONS: Two to three years of high school Italian acceptable in lieu of prerequisite.

ITAL 107 Italian III - Intermediate

Review of grammar, continued practice in speaking and writing, reading texts of average difficulty. 

4 credit hours

PREREQ: ITAL106 

RESTRICTIONS: Four years of high school Italian acceptable in lieu of prerequisite. Satisfies College of Arts and Sciences language requirement.

ITAL 205-010/080 Italian Conversation

Practical use of Italian by means of oral reports and discussions. Emphasis on improvement of basic conversational skills. Grammar review and written work when appropriate. 

3 credit hours

PREREQ: ITAL107 

RESTRICTIONS: Prerequisite requires a minimum grade of B. One 200-level Italian course may be substituted for Prerequisite.

ITAL 211-010/080 Italian Reading and Composition: Short Fiction

Reading and discussion of Italian short stories. Several short compositions. Grammar review where appropriate. 

3 credit hours

PREREQ: ITAL200, ITAL205 or ITAL206.

Note: This course satisfies the College of Arts & Sciences Group A: Creative Arts & Humanities Breadth Requirement.

ITAL 300-010/080 Advanced Italian Composition and Grammar

Students will practice, apply, and enhance the language skills learned in earlier classes through different kinds of written communications (i.e. summaries, opinion papers, narrations, feature articles) and class participation. A course packet with contemporary short stories in Italian will serve as the basis for writing projects and class discussion. 

3 credit hours

PREREQ: ITAL211 or ITAL212.

ITAL 311-010/080 Survey of Italian Literature

Development of Italian literature from the mid-17th century to the present. Study and discussion of representative works. 

3 credit hours

PREREQ: ITAL211 or ITAL212

Note: This course satisfies the College of Arts & Sciences Group B: History & Cultural Change Breadth Requirement.

ITAL 455-010/080 Selected Authors, Works and Themes

Works of one or more outstanding authors or on a special theme. 

3 credit hours

PREREQ: Any two Ital 300-level literature courses 

RESTRICTIONS: Can be repeated for credit when topics vary. May be offered jointly with ITAL655.

Note: A 400 level section meets with a 600 level section.

LLCU 420-010 Topics in Italian Literature

Examine diverse Italian authors and literary movements. Hone critical thinking skills while developing the tools necessary for perceptive literary and cultural analysis. 

3 credit hours

RESTRICTIONS: May be repeated three times with different topics for credit.

Note: A 400 level section meets with a 600 level section.

Section satisfies A&S writing requirement.
