Dr. Ali Alalou, Associate Professor of French and Pedagogy, won a $1480 IGS-Globex grant to present the paper "Globalization and Identity in Multilingual and Multicultural North Africa" at the first International Conference on Multilingualism at Ibn Zohr University's Center for Letters and Human Science in Agadir, Morocco, in May 2018.

Dr. Joan L. Brown at Harvard University's Cervantes Institute

Dr. Joan L. Brown, Elias Ahuja Chair of Spanish, presented a talk on the future of Hispanic Studies at Harvard University's Cervantes Institute on April 19, 2018. She spoke about the importance of diversification, professionalization and a foundational canon for graduate education. The presentation was part of a panel commemorating the centennial issue of the journal Hispania, to which she also contributed.

Dr. Jianguo Chen, Associate Professor of Chinese and Director of the Confucius Institute, gave a presentation at UD's 19th China Forum Lecture Series on May 8, 2018. He focused on "The Wisdom of Confucius: the Analects of Confucius Revisited." In his talk, Jianguo discussed the book, which he authored, together with Dr. Chungmin Maria Tu, Assistant Professor of Chinese. His presented an essential Confucius by putting him in historical perspective and discuss why Confucianism still matters in today's world.

Dr. Barbara Moltchanov and Dr. Tracy Quan received a CTAL Instructional Improvement Grant for their project: "Introduction to World Language Learning" Dr. Quan also received a CTAL Travel Grant to attend the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages 2018.

Dr. Meredith Ray, Professor of Italian, was awarded a 2017 research fellowship from the Renaissance Society of America for her new book project, East of Italy: Early Modern Women Abroad in Italy, Poland, and Dalmatia. She was also the 2017-2018 Charles Speroni Endowed Chair in the Department of Italian at the University of California, Los Angeles, Finally, she received a $3000 grant from the University of Delaware Center for Global and Area Studies to conduct research in Venice, Italy for her project on early modern women.

Dr. Asima Saad-Maura visiting Madrid during her time in Spain

Dr. Asima Saad-Maura, Associate Professor of Spanish, organized and moderated a panel and participated in a roundtable on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz: "Recreaciones y nuevas aproximaciones" (Recreations and new aproximations) at the XIII Biannual Conference of the Society for Renaissance and Baroque Poetry in Spain in October, 2017. Dr. Saad-Maura received generous support from IGS-GLOBEX and the DLLC to attend the conference.

Dr. Richard Zipser, Professor Emeritus of German, was honored to accept an invitation to become a member of the International PEN Centre of German-Speaking Authors Abroad in April 2018. PEN International promotes literature and freedom of expression. Founded in the UK in 1921, this global community of writers now spans more than 100 countries.
